The investigation is still ongoing.
Multi-Vehicle Accident Statistics
Multi-vehicle accidents are becoming increasingly common on our roads. As the number of cars on the road grows, so does the chance of a multi-car collision. But what exactly is a multi-vehicle accident? And what are the consequences of such an accident?
A multi-vehicle accident is exactly what it sounds like: an accident involving more than two vehicles. These accidents range from relatively minor fender benders to serious and fatal collisions. Multi-vehicle accidents often occur on busy highways and interstates, where cars travel at high speeds, and there is little room for error. A large number of vehicles on the road increases the chances of an accident, as does inclement weather and poor road conditions.
38,824 people were killed in motor vehicle traffic accidents on US highways in 2020. This is the highest number of deaths since 2007. It also represents a 6.8 percent increase from the 36,355 fatalities recorded in 2019 or 2,469 more people killed in traffic accidents in 2020.
A variety of factors can cause multi-vehicle accidents. One of the most common causes is following too closely behind the car in front of you. If the vehicle in front of you suddenly slows down or stops, you may not have enough time to react and could rear-end them. This could create a domino effect, with the car behind you crashing into you. Another common cause of multi-car accidents is distracted driving. Distracted driving can be anything from talking on the phone to changing the music to eating while driving. Taking your eyes off the road, even for a second, can be enough time for an accident to happen.
Road rage is another major cause of multi-vehicle accidents. We’ve all been there: someone cuts us off in traffic or drives too slowly in the left lane, and we get angry. When we let that anger boil over, it can lead to dangerous behaviors like tailgating, speeding, and weaving in and out of traffic. Any one of these behaviors could easily lead to an accident involving multiple vehicles.
