Pedestrian Accident Statistics

The pedestrian in a collision with a car is much more likely to die or be seriously injured than the driver. Since they are not shielded, pedestrians in a car accident are likely to suffer serious injuries.

An increasing number of pedestrians are being injured or killed in the United States. Pedestrian deaths have been consistently high for quite some time.

The Governors Highway Safety Association reports a 27 percent increase in pedestrian deaths between 2007 and 2016, despite a 14 percent decrease in overall traffic fatalities during that time period.

In 2017, 5,977 people died in pedestrian accidents across the United States. Final 2016 estimates placed the death toll at 88 persons per minute.
In 2017, there were 137,000 nonfatal pedestrian accidents that required hospitalization.

There are two common ways that people hurt or kill pedestrians: by not giving way to them or by stopping too quickly. If you file a lawsuit because you were hurt while out for a walk, you should hire a good lawyer.
