A man in his 50s was found dead at a homeless encampment in East Oakland, having been struck by a portion of a wrought iron fence that was impacted by an out-of-control vehicle on Monday morning, October 7, 2024.
Police reported that the man’s body was discovered around 11:00 a.m. on October 9, 2024, in the 2200 block of East 12th Street, where he had been living. He is believed to have sustained fatal injuries around 2:20 a.m. on Monday.
Preliminary investigations indicate that two cars were traveling westbound at high speeds when one vehicle side-swiped the other near 23rd Avenue. This caused a 2008 Acura TL to lose control and crash into the fence surrounding the encampment, striking the man who was standing just inside.
The Acura’s driver was treated for minor injuries and released from a hospital, reportedly unaware that someone had been struck. The second vehicle involved in the incident fled the scene, and authorities are actively seeking that driver.
A woman residing in the encampment discovered the deceased man on Wednesday and notified the police. She described him as a friendly person who had lived in the area for at least six months.
The police investigation is ongoing.

Steps To Take After An Accident In Oakland, CA
While no one can predict an accident, you can be prepared. An accident checklist can help you stay organized and calm after a crash. It outlines what to do, what not to do, and how to protect your rights.
Whether you are the injured party or a family member of a deceased victim, here’s what you should do following an accident:
- Stay Calm – Remain at the scene and check everyone’s condition. First, check yourself for injuries, then others. Stay composed and try to regain your calm.
- Move to Safety – If possible, move your vehicle to the side of the road and turn on your emergency flashers to alert other drivers. Find a safe place to wait for the police.
- Call 911 – Report your accident to the authorities as soon as possible. The police will document the incident and gather information for an official record.
- Exchange Information – Share names, phone numbers, and insurance details with the other driver(s). If possible, take photos of the vehicles, license plates, and other critical details.
- Do Not Admit Fault – Avoid admitting fault or apologizing when talking to the police or others involved. Stick to the facts when describing the incident.
- Seek Medical Attention – Visit a hospital or your primary doctor immediately. Prompt medical care can help mitigate the effects of injuries and identify internal injuries.
- Report to Your Insurance Company – California insurers have deadlines for reporting accidents. Contact your insurer promptly and follow the agent’s instructions.
- Handle Insurance Adjusters Carefully – You may receive a call from the other party’s insurer soon after the accident. Be cautious with the information you share. Do not record statements or accept settlement offers before consulting an attorney.
