Motorcycle Accident Statistics

More than 5,000 motorcyclists were killed in 2016 accidents, according to data compiled by the DOT’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). Beginning in 1998 and continuing through 2008, this increase reversed a long-term decline that had been in effect since the 1980s.

When comparing motorcycle riders to car occupants, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that motorcyclists face a startling 16 times higher risk of injury and a shocking 35 times higher risk of death in a collision.

Nearly two-thirds of motorcycle accidents occur at intersections, often because other drivers simply don’t see the motorcycle. Motorcycle riders have a higher crash risk than car or truck drivers due to their smaller size and limited maneuverability.

The majority of these paths are listed on motorcycleroads.com’s “Top 100 Motorcycle Roads in California” page. The number of motorcycle registrations in this state consistently ranks high nationally. In the past year, nearly 800,000 motorcycles have been registered in the state.

It was estimated that 15,527 motorcyclists were injured, and 541 were killed in 2017.
