Fatal Big Rig Accident Statistics

Big rigs are the colloquial name for the massive tractor-trailers and semis with which we frequently share the road. Both of these terms can be used to describe big delivery trucks.

There is a significant increase in fatalities from tractor-trailer accidents compared to other vehicle collisions. The huge size of semi-trucks and other big rigs is largely to blame. It takes up more room for a semi-truck with a load to come to a stop.

Around once every 15 minutes, someone in the United States is killed in a crash involving a semi-truck. Every year, about half a million people in the United States lose their lives in transportation-related accidents; about 5,000 truck drivers are among them.

About 113 people per year are killed, and nearly 3,000 are injured in California due to truck accidents. Every year in the Golden State of California, between two hundred and three hundred people lose their lives in trucking accidents.

The number of people killed in accidents involving semi-trucks reached an all-time high between 2009 and 2015, the most recent year for which data is available. Tractor-trailer accidents caused one in ten deaths on American roads in 2015. If you’re towing a trailer, it’s better to follow the four-second rule, especially when it’s wet, frosty, or icy.

According to the four-second rule, you must leave four seconds between you and the vehicle in front of you. By doing so, you give yourself more time to react and more time to stop. When traveling at speeds greater than forty miles per hour, a second must be added.
