Big Rig Accident Statistics

The massive tractor-trailers and semis of today are commonly referred to as “big rigs.” The two terms are interchangeable in the business world when referring to trucks.

The fatality rate from tractor-trailer accidents is much higher than that from other types of car accidents. Semitrailers and buses, which are both very large vehicles, are a major factor in this issue. Semitrailers need more room to stop when they are carrying a lot of cargo.

Every 15 minutes, a person is killed in the United States because of a truck-related accident. Nearly half a million people per year are killed in transportation-related accidents, including 5,000 truck drivers in the United States alone.

Truck accidents cause an average of 113 deaths and nearly 3,000 injuries per year in California. Every year in California, between two hundred and three hundred people are killed in accidents involving trucks.

Between 2009 and 2015, the number of fatalities associated with semi-truck accidents reached an all-time high. One out of every ten people killed on American roads was a passenger in a tractor-trailer collision in 2015.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration suggests leaving at least 4 seconds of space when following a large truck going less than 40 miles per hour. When traveling at speeds greater than forty miles per hour, another second must be added.

Internal Injuries

It’s possible that you won’t know how serious your injuries are until you get home from the hospital. Without medical training and experience, it can be challenging to determine the extent of an internal injury. It’s possible the wound is internal rather than external. You may not realize you’re bleeding until it’s too late if you don’t have your blood pressure checked regularly by a doctor.
