Workplace Accident Statistics

While the vast majority of workplaces are risk-free, some pose serious dangers to employees because of their unique makeup or geographical location. The construction, manufacturing, farming, and transportation sectors account for a disproportionate share of workplace fatalities.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OHSA), more than 4,500 workers are killed or injured every year due to workplace accidents.

As reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than two-thirds of American workers suffered an injury on the job in 2019. This figure has stayed the same into 2020.

Despite a steady rate of workplace fatalities, the number of workers’ comp claims has been dropping. There were 5,333 fatalities in the workplace in 2018, a 2% increase from 2017. Since 2010, the annual death toll has increased steadily.

The number of fatalities that occurred on the job increased by 2% in 2018. There have been 5,333 fatalities associated with traffic-related incidents so far this year. Trips, slips, and falls caused 16% of accidental deaths. Car crashes accounted for 39.8% of all fatalities in the country in 2016.
