Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics

It is against the law to flee the scene of an accident without notifying the proper authorities. Every day in the United States, one person is injured, and another is killed in a hit-and-run accident. In the United States, hit-and-run accidents have caused the deaths of at least 2,000 people as of 2016.

Tragic hit-and-run accidents seem to be on the rise. Between 2009 and 2016, there was a 7 percent increase in the number of people killed by hit-and-run motorists. Unintentional road deaths continue to rise, and hit-and-run accidents are a major contributing factor.

California had the highest rate of fatalities from hit-and-run accidents. In 2012, there were 33,057 deaths in the United States due to traffic accidents, with 3,056 deaths in California.

The prospect of serious injury in a car accident is terrifying. The situation could become even more dangerous if the other driver does not pull over and accept responsibility.

If a driver has been drinking or using drugs, is driving illegally, or is afraid to be caught, they are more likely to flee the scene of an accident after it has occurred.
