Dog Bite Injury Statistics

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 4.5 million people are attacked by dogs yearly in the United States, and more than 800,000 require medical attention due to dog bites. Children make up at least half of bite victims.

The state with the most dog bite fatalities in 2019 was California. In 36 dog attacks in 2018, 15 children and 21 adults lost their lives.

Dogs can attack in many ways, including biting, scratching, and knocking down. Dog bites happen when a dog bite physically harms a person. Bites can cause infection, deformity, temporary or permanent impairment, or even death.

Laws governing dog attacks vary from state to state. The steps that must be taken in court when a dog bite case is brought up are outlined in Section 3342 of the California Penal Code. Those who suffer losses from a dog bite in a public or private setting where the dog’s owner was present lawfully are liable under this clause.

Because dogs bite so frequently, people should exercise caution when petting other canines. Even though some dogs can still bite if not provoked, it is best to maintain your composure and steer clear of physical contact.
