Fatal Motorcycle Crash Statistics

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycles are involved in 11% of all traffic accidents in the US (NHTSA). There were 4,985 motorcycle fatalities and 82,000 injuries in 2018.

This statistic is not surprising given that riders have a 16 times higher risk of suffering severe or fatal injuries in a car accident than passengers in enclosed vehicles.

The risk of severe head trauma has been shown to decrease with the use of helmets. Estimates show that wearing a helmet reduces the risk of dying while riding a motorcycle by 37%. The rest of their bodies, however, might still be in danger.

Motorcycle accidents are caused by speeding, careless driving, driving while intoxicated or high, driving in bad weather, driving the wrong way, and breaking traffic laws.
