Train Accident Statistics

When it comes to saving both time and money, taking a train is your best bet. Passengers’ and workers’ safety depends on a number of factors, such as the skill of the conductors and the regularity of necessary repairs. These people pose a threat due to their potential for carelessness and the taking of unnecessary risks.

Every two hours, a person or their vehicle is hit by a train, according to data from the National Transportation Safety Board. The annual death toll from train accidents exceeds a thousand. About 2,300 people were hurt, and 600 people lost their lives.

Unsafe crossings, out-of-date or nonexistent safety features, and the absence of warning systems for motorists account for half of all fatal train accidents.

More people are killed by trains than cars, says the National Transportation Safety Board.

Around 7,200 people have lost their lives in train accidents in the United States since 1997. In recent years, pedestrians struck by trains have surpassed workers as the leading cause of death along America’s railroads.

Derailment, deteriorating tracks, disregard for safety regulations, insufficient security, and other forms of carelessness account for the vast majority of train accidents.
