[11-03-2024] Los Angeles County, CA – One Dead, Five Hospitalized After Boat Capsizes Near Redondo Beach

A tragic boating accident off the coast of Redondo Beach left one person dead and five others hospitalized on Sunday afternoon, November 3, 2024.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department‘s Lifeguard Division reported that they received calls about the overturned vessel approximately two miles from Avenue C.

Rescue teams from the Redondo Beach Fire Department and LACoFD arrived to find five individuals clinging to the side of the capsized boat.

While the five victims were successfully pulled from the water, rescue teams could not initially locate a sixth individual who had been on board. A Los Angeles County dive team later found the unidentified person deceased inside the vessel.

The five survivors, believed to be between the ages of 20 and 30, were taken to the hospital, but their conditions were not immediately known.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department taking control of the inquiry.

The boat was towed to King Harbor, where it remained as of Sunday evening. Further details have not been released.

The fatality rate was 5.4 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational vessels, reflecting a 1.8% decrease from the 2021 rate of 5.5 deaths per 100,000 vessels.

When compared to 2021, the number of boating accidents fell by 9%, fatalities decreased by 3.3%, and injuries dropped by 15.9%. Among victims where the cause of death was known, 75% drowned, and of those who drowned, 85% were not wearing a life jacket. Additionally, 75% of drowning victims were on boats under 21 feet long when vessel length was reported.

Alcohol use was identified as the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents, responsible for 16% of deaths where the primary cause was known. Collisions—whether with other vessels, objects, or due to groundings—were the most frequent initial events in accidents, accounting for 55% of all incidents, 21% of deaths, and 53% of injuries.
