Fatal Big Rig Accident Statistics

A semi-truck is only one of the terms used for the massive commercial trucks that roam our highways and byways. Other terms used to describe these commercial trucks are big rigs, 18-wheelers, tractor-trailers, semi-trailer trucks.

Compared to the average car, a big rig can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds. Accidents can result from this huge disparity in size.

According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation, fatalities involving big rig trucks have increased by 30 percent since 2009. In 2017 alone, big rig accidents resulted in the deaths of 4,102 people.

Several different things can cause trucking accidents involving large commercial vehicles. These include driver fatigue and inattentiveness, and mechanical failures, such as tire blowouts or vehicle failures that render the vehicle inoperable or non-operational.
