Pedestrian Accident Statistics
A report released by the Governors Highway Safety Association estimates that 7,485 pedestrians were killed by vehicles in 2021, a record high for the past 40 years.
Speeding was responsible for 8.6% of pedestrian deaths in 2020, up from 7.2% in 2019. Speed is critical to pedestrian safety. A pedestrian’s death risk increases exponentially with vehicle speed, from 10% at 23 mph to 90% at 58 mph.
Accidents involving pedestrians frequently have tragic outcomes. Pedestrians would be unprotected in a collision between two vehicles and sustain serious injuries.
Pedestrian accidents now account for more injuries and fatalities on American roads. Historically, pedestrians have been most at risk in car accidents.
It is advised that pedestrians always walk on the sidewalks, refrain from drinking or using drugs while walking, and cross parking lots and driveways carefully. As a result, they will be less likely to be hurt in these collisions.
