Truck Collision Statistics
The National Safety Council reported 4,842 fatal crashes involving large trucks in 2020, a 4% decrease from 2019 but a 33% increase since 2011. The involvement rate per 100 million large-truck miles traveled is 5% lower than in 2019 but 18% higher than in 2011.
The term “large truck” refers to any medium or heavy truck over 10,000 pounds in gross vehicle weight, excluding buses and motorhomes. This category includes both commercial and non-commercial vehicles.
Some of the deadliest collisions on American highways and roads involve large trucks. Given the vast size difference between tractor-trailers and passenger cars, truck accidents frequently result in more fatalities than other traffic collisions.
Investigations into collisions involving 18-wheelers must consider several variables. Truck accidents are often caused by loss of control, tire blowouts, incapacitating or non-capacitating vehicle failures, excessive speed, lane drifting, improper truck maneuvering, and driver fatigue.
