Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
In recent years, the total number of pedestrian fatalities and injuries, as well as the severity of those injuries, have increased across the United States.
The data provided by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) indicate that the overall number of traffic-related fatalities decreased by 14% between 2007 and 2016 but that the number of pedestrian deaths increased by 27%.
In 2016, 5,977 pedestrians lost their lives across the country. At the end of that year, it was estimated that 88 individuals passed away per minute. During the year 2017, pedestrian injuries took at least 137,000 people to the emergency rooms of local hospitals.
In 2012, there were 893 pedestrian deaths and over 14,000 pedestrian injuries in the state of California. Some study indicates that due to this, the state has the most significant rate of pedestrian deaths and serious injuries.
Accidents almost often include pedestrians when motorists fail to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians or when they stop their vehicles too abruptly. Talking to a lawyer who specializes in cases like yours is your best bet if you plan on taking legal action of any kind.
