Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

A pedestrian is more at risk than a passenger in a private vehicle when it comes to the hazards of the road. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, pedestrian fatalities in the United States climbed by 27% between 2007 and 2016, while other traffic-related deaths declined by 14%.

In the United States, 5,977 pedestrians were killed in automobile accidents in 2017. At least one person dies due to pedestrian accidents every 88 minutes.

But why are pedestrian accidents more fatal compared to other types of traffic accidents?

When a pedestrian is involved in an accident, they do not have any protection that can help them avoid fatal injuries. Passengers in automobiles, which weigh an average of at least 4,000 pounds, are secured by seat belts and airbags.

Even bicyclists wear helmets as a safety precaution. Pedestrians have no protection if a negligent driver comes along their way, which is why pedestrian fatalities are higher than other types of traffic fatalities.
