Fatal Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics

According to the NHTSA, there were more than 5.2 million police-reported car collisions in the United States in 2020. Thirty percent of those crashes (1.6 million) resulted in injuries, and fewer than 1 percent (35,766) resulted in deaths.

Trends show that fatal crashes increased by 6.8 percent from 2019 to 2020, and the fatality rate increased to 1.34 deaths for every 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2020. The injury rate decreased by 6.0 percent from 2019 to 2020, to 79 people injured per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2020.

The majority of those killed and injured in traffic accidents were drivers (67%), followed by passengers (24%), motorcyclists (4%), pedestrians (3%), and pedal cyclists (2%).

When three or more drivers are involved, a multiple-vehicle collision results from a series of circumstances. There may be as many as six cars trapped in the wreckage after an accident.

Unlike traffic accidents, multi-vehicle collisions usually result in fatalities, serious injuries, and property damage. Losing control or having poor situational awareness may injure those nearby. The likelihood of such collisions is higher in most cases.
