Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Pedestrian accidents are among the most dangerous on the road. There are many reasons for this, but pedestrians are particularly vulnerable. For one thing, there is no safety net in place to catch them if something goes wrong.

In the United States, pedestrian deaths increased by 27% between 2007 and 2016, while other traffic-related deaths decreased by 14%, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).

In 2017, there were 5,977 pedestrian deaths in the United States. Every 88 minutes, at least one person loses their life in a pedestrian accident.

Pedestrians are frequently seriously injured or killed in car accidents. People who are hit by cars while crossing the street can suffer internal injuries, broken bones, and minor abrasions and bruises. Untreated internal injuries and broken bones have the potential to result in death or permanent disability.

Most of these accidents are caused by various factors, including failure to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks, distracted driving, speeding, drunk driving, reckless driving, poor visibility, wrong-way driving, and a failure to follow the highway code, amongst other things.

To ensure their own safety, pedestrians should only cross streets and sidewalks at marked crosswalks.
