Steps To Take After A Bicycle Accident In Sacramento, CA
If you get into a bicycle accident, the first thing you should do is prioritize your safety. Although it is essential to gather and preserve evidence, only do this if you are safe and able. Bicycle accident injuries can get severe. Do not compromise your safety, and let the authorities handle the evidence.
However, if you can, here are things you should do after an accident:
- Call 911 immediately. They will dispatch the police and EMTs to the scene.
- Stay on the scene. Never leave the scene, even if the driver who hit you ran away from the accident. Wait for the authorities to send you off and make sure to get checked by the dispatched medical team.
- Move from harm’s way if you can. Make sure to bring your bicycle with you to the side of the road. This ensures no one else gets hurt and further accidents can be avoided.
- Gather evidence. Take photos and videos of the scene, including the defendant’s car model and plate number. Also, take videos of the surroundings that show the weather and road conditions. Capture every angle of the scene, such as where the accident took place and the flow of traffic at the time.
- Exchange contact details. Provide and obtain contact details with the driver/s and their insurance details. If there are any witnesses, ask them for details as well. Jot down their names and contact information. Additionally, ask them if they can be contacted for further assistance.
- Never admit fault for the accident, even the police. This can hurt your case. Avoid discussing the issue, especially when insurance companies call you. Don’t even say “sorry” as this can be used against you.
- Call Sacramento bicycle accident attorneys as soon as you can. Having legal assistance early on can significantly help your claim and avoid missing any filing deadlines.
