Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

The number of individuals who died in car accidents declined by 14% between 2007 and 2016, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association, whereas the number of pedestrian deaths climbed by 27% over the same time period.

What this demonstrates is that the number of pedestrian fatalities and the severity of injuries received across the United States has been on the rise in recent years.

In 2016, 5,927 pedestrians were killed nationwide. Towards the end of that year, 88 people were dying per minute on average. Over the course of 2017, injuries accounted for the treatment of at least 137,000 patients in hospital emergency departments.

A total of 893 pedestrians died, and over 14,000 were injured in California in 2012. Certain studies suggest that this puts the state at the top of the list for the highest number of pedestrian deaths and serious injuries.

Almost without exception, pedestrians are the ones hurt or killed when cars fail to yield to them or stop abruptly. If you’re considering filing a lawsuit, it’s in your best interest to consult with an attorney with experience in this particular case.
