Workplace Accident Statistics
Each year, over 4,500 workers are killed or severely injured in workplace incidents, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OHSA). The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that approximately two-thirds of American workers sustained workplace injuries in 2019. This number has remained constant through 2020.
Despite a constant rate of workplace fatalities, workers’ compensation claims have been steadily declining. There were 5,333 fatal workplace accidents in 2018, a 2% increase from 2017. Since 2010, the annual death toll has been steadily increasing.
There were 2% more fatal workplace accidents in 2018 than in 2017. There have been 5,333 fatalities related to traffic-related incidents so far this year. Trips, slips, and falls caused 16% of accidental deaths. In 2016, car accidents were responsible for 39.8% of all fatalities in the nation.
While most workplaces are risk-free, some pose serious risks to employees because of their unique characteristics or location. The manufacturing, farming, transportation, and construction industries account for most fatal workplace accidents.
The top three causes of workplace fatalities are homicides, car crashes, and workplace injuries. Overexertion from lifting and moving heavy objects, trips, and falls are the most common workplace injury causes that do not result in fatalities.
