Fatal Truck Accident Statistics

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveal that large trucks were responsible for 8.9% of fatal crashes in 2010 but only 3.8% of injuries and 5% of property damage. Combination trucks made up 64.6% of the 4,842 large trucks involved in fatal collisions.

American highways and roads are frequently plagued by fatal collisions involving large trucks. Due to the size disparity between a tractor-trailer and a passenger car, fatalities in tractor-trailer accidents are more frequent than in other types of traffic collisions.

Any medium or heavy truck that weighs more than 10,000 pounds, excluding buses and recreational vehicles, is referred to as a “large truck.” This category of vehicles includes both noncommercial and commercial vehicles.

Passengers make up the majority of the fatalities in large truck accidents. The main problem is the vulnerability of passengers in smaller vehicles. Trucks often weigh 20 to 30 times more than passenger cars, have more height and ground clearance, and may underride smaller vehicles.
