Hit-And-Run Collision Statistics

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, hit-and-run collisions cause 680,000 injuries or fatalities among Americans each year. Recent studies show an increase in deaths resulting from hit-and-runs. In 2020, these mishaps were a factor in 24% of all pedestrian fatalities.

Studies show California has the highest number of pedestrian fatalities and severe injuries. California recorded over 14,000 pedestrian injuries and 893 pedestrian deaths in 2012.

Hit-and-run collisions occur when one vehicle strikes another and leaves the scene without aiding the injured party.

The primary reason why pedestrians are hurt is due to distracted driving. The driver may converse on the phone, adjust the radio, or interact with other passengers while driving. One is more likely to miss someone crossing the street when multitasking.

As a precaution, pedestrians are advised to wear bright clothing to prevent injuries. Additionally, you should cross the street cautiously and only when you see an oncoming vehicle.
