Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics

Even though several rules protect bicyclists in the United States, bicycle accidents are an unavoidable occurrence. In 2018, around 800 bicyclists were killed in the United States. California has the highest number of bike fatalities per year in the US.

The majority of these collisions occur in metropolitan settings, where vehicles and bicycles frequently collide. Cars colliding with bikes are the leading cause of bicyclist injuries and deaths in the state. In several of these incidents, the driver failed to give the right of way, was unable to check for bikes before pulling out, ran a stop sign or red light, or was otherwise distracted while driving.

For the people of California, riding a bike is an appealing means of transportation because of the state’s moderate temperature, dense metropolitan areas, and the state’s large investment in bicycle infrastructure. According to a recent study, California has continuously ranked among the top 10 most bike-friendly states in the United States.

Unfortunately, bicycle accident in the Golden State is not an uncommon occurrence. Cyclist deaths account for 4% of all motor accidents in California. This is twice the national average, putting California first in the US in terms of cycling deaths.

According to new data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 455 cyclists were killed in traffic incidents in California from 2016 to 2018.
