Fatal Big Rig Accident Statistics

Trucks, being larger and more robust than cars, offer greater protection to their drivers in the event of an accident. According to the National Safety Council, this is a leading cause of death for pedestrians and passengers in cars of low mass.

More than 4,000 individuals are killed yearly in the United States due to truck accidents. Large trucks are involved in only 2% of accidents overall but are responsible for 12% of fatalities.

These truck drivers in California are restricted from exceeding 55 miles per hour on any public road. The goal here is to lower the likelihood of collisions involving tractor-trailers. In the state, there are over 28,000 truck accidents annually, according to the Office of Traffic Safety. There were 9,500 injuries and 359 deaths in 2017.

If you’re driving behind a big rig and going less than 40 miles per hour, the FMCSA suggests giving yourself 4 seconds of space. Just accelerate up by another second.
