Fatal Big Rig Crash Statistics

The economic impact of semi-trucks cannot be overstated. Our nation’s trucking business delivers billions of pounds of commodities every year. Big rigs pose a serious threat to other drivers on the road, so it’s best to avoid them at all costs.

Semi-truck collisions are more lethal than other kinds of car accidents because of their sheer size. Big rig accidents frequently result in significant injury or death because of their enormous size differential from other vehicles on the road.

According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation, truck fatality rates have climbed by 30 percent since 2009.

Every year, around 500,000 trucking accidents occur across the country, with approximately 5,000 of them resulting in death. There were 388,000 large truck incidents in 2018. This equates to around 6.5 percent of all accidents being caused by trucks.

Various circumstances, including driver over-fatigue, can cause semi-truck accidents. Loss of truck control, tire blowouts, disabling or non-disabling vehicle failure, excessive speed, lane drifting, and inappropriate truck maneuvering are common factors of semi-truck accidents.
