Big Rig Accident Statistics

A semi-truck is only one of the many names for the big commercial lorries that clog our highways and byways. A big rig, an 18-wheeler, a tractor-trailer, and a semi-trailer truck are some other terms.

The trucking industry is a multibillion-dollar sector with enormous profitability. It must, however, follow tight rules and regulations in order to keep everyone on our road system safe. When the industry chooses to cut shortcuts on safety in order to meet demand and boost its bottom line, it endangers motorists worldwide.

According to data from the United States Department of Transportation, about 4,000 persons were killed in tractor-trailer accidents in the United States in 2015. From 2009 to 2015, the number of semi-truck accident fatalities increased by a startling 22%. In 2015, a tractor-trailer was involved in 11% of all road deaths.

Big rig crashes are often complicated cases as a variety of factors need to be considered. Big rig crashes are usually caused by loss of control of the truck, a tire blowout, a disabling or non-disabling vehicle failure, excessive speed, lane drifting, improper truck maneuvering, and driver fatigue.
