Fatal Big Rig Accident Statistics

According to the US Department of Transportation, there were nearly 4,000 fatal tractor-trailer accidents nationwide in 2015.

The percentage of fatalities in collisions involving semi-trucks increased by a startling 22% between 2009 and 2015. One out of every ten traffic fatalities in 2015 involved a tractor-trailer.

On American highways, large commercial trucks with various names are familiar. The term big rig can also refer to an 18-wheeler, tractor-trailer, or semi-trailer.

Some of the deadliest collisions on American highways and roads involve large trucks. Because of the vast size disparity between tractor-trailers and passenger cars, accidents involving big rigs frequently result in more fatalities than other traffic collisions.

Investigations into collisions involving 18-wheelers must consider several variables. Loss of truck control, tire blowouts, incapacitating or non-capacitating vehicle failures, excessive speed, lane drifting, improper truck maneuvering, and driver fatigue are the most frequent causes of large truck accidents.
