Fatal Big Rig Accident Statistics

Trucking businesses in the United States move commodities worth billions of dollars yearly, making semi-trucks an essential part of the economy. Thus, the presence of semi-trucks on the road increases the likelihood of collisions.

To put it bluntly, accidents involving semi-trucks are the worst kind. Large trucks, known as “big rigs,” are so massive that they block the roads for smaller vehicles.

Data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation reveals a 30% increase in truck-related fatalities since 2009. In 2017, 4,102 people lost their lives due to the negligence of big rig drivers.

Heavy vehicles are a leading cause of mortality and injury in the Golden State. In 2019, 3,606 people were killed in 3,316 car accidents. Roughly 150 of the more than 300 people killed in truck accidents were passengers.

Safely passing a commercial truck includes avoiding its blind region. As the driver has a larger blind spot than the passengers, passengers should avoid sitting on the vehicle’s passenger side. Drivers are the only ones allowed to make lane changes.
