Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
The country takes hit-and-run accidents very seriously. If the driver can be identified, he will almost certainly be held responsible and punished accordingly.
At least one hit-and-run incident occurs every single day in the United States. Since 2006, over 2,000 people have been killed in such situations, with 60% of those fatalities being pedestrians.
In about 20% of vehicle-related pedestrian deaths, the offending motorists never stop to help the victims. Most of the time, drunkenness, licensing issues, or the fear of being arrested are the root causes of these drivers’ flights.
Between 2007 and 2016, pedestrian fatalities increased by 27%, despite a 14% overall decline in traffic-related mortality.
Between 2009 and 2016, more people were killed in hit-and-run accidents in California than in any other state. There were 3,056 people killed in auto accidents in the United States in 2012. More specifically, California was responsible for 3,562 of these fatalities.
