Truck Accident Statistics

According to the National Safety Council, approximately 4,842 fatal accidents involved large trucks in 2020. While up 33% since 2011, this represents a 4% decline from 2019. The involvement rate per 100 million large-truck miles traveled is up 18% from 2011 but down 5% from 2019.

Generally, large trucks are defined as medium or heavy trucks whose gross vehicle weight exceeds 10,000 pounds, excluding buses and motorhomes. This category includes both commercial and noncommercial vehicles.

Fatal collisions involving large trucks occur on American highways and roads now and then. Due to the enormous size difference between tractor-trailers and passenger cars, truck accidents frequently result in more fatalities than other traffic collisions.

Investigations into accidents involving 18-wheelers must consider several different things. Truck accidents frequently result from loss of control, tire blowouts, incapacitating or non-capacitating vehicle failures, excessive speed, lane drifting, improper truck maneuvering, and driver fatigue.
