Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics

It is indisputable that motorcycle riders are among the most vulnerable drivers on the road. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcycle riders are 16 times more likely to be injured and 35 times more likely to be killed in a crash than car passengers.

Motorcycle accidents can often have severe, even fatal, consequences. In 2016, around 5,286 motorcyclists were killed in the United States.

Over 800,000 motorcycles are registered in California. This, of course, means that California has more motorcycle accidents than other states. In 2017, there were 16,505 motorcycle accidents in California, with 15,527 people injured and 541 people killed.

However, there is a way to avoid suffering deadly injuries in the event of a car accident. To prevent catastrophic injuries, motorcycle riders are recommended to dress appropriately and wear a helmet every time they ride their motorcycle. Helmets are predicted to be 37% effective in preventing motorcycle fatalities.

A good personal injury lawyer will understand the types of injuries you sustained in your accident. Certain accidents are more likely to produce certain types of damages.

A bicycle or motorcycle rider, for example, is likely to have serious musculoskeletal injuries and possibly internal organ damage at the site of impact. This is because bicyclists and motorcycles have very little protection from the impact. Unlike vehicle occupants, they are not shielded from the force of the collision by airbags or seat belts.
