[11-26-2022] San Francisco County, CA - One Person Struck and Killed in a Caltrain CrashAuthorities said one individual was killed after being struck by a Caltrain in San Francisco on Saturday morning, November 26, 2022.

According to Caltrain, the fatal crash occurred at 8:58 a.m. on the track of Tunnel 3 in San Francisco.

The person was reportedly trespassing on the tracks when the #221 train traveling north struck them.

The tracks were put on hold in both directions while emergency personnel arrived at the site. Trains are single tracking through the region, according to Caltrain.

There were 178 passengers on board the #221 train during the crash. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries.

Caltrain reported afterward that the #221 train had resumed operation.

Since the beginning of 2022, ten people have died in a Caltrain crash.

Fatal Train Accident Statistics

The 893 railroad deaths reported in 2021 were 20% higher than the 744 deaths reported in 2020 and were the greatest since 2007, a report said. The number of nonfatal injuries was 5,781, up by 4% from the reported 5,544 in 2020.

The number of fatalities at highway-rail crossings increased by 21% from 2020 to 2021, whereas all other accident deaths increased by 20%. The latter had a fatality rate of 94%, or 617 people, all of whom were trespassers.

The number of workplace fatalities was the same in 2020, with eleven workers losing their lives. Six other people on the train were killed, compared to two in 2020.

Injuries and illnesses that don’t result in death account for about 1 in 6 cases where the railroad was a contributing factor. Of the 893 people killed in the year 2021, 266 of them were struck by trains while crossing the tracks.

A total of 3,216 nonfatal injuries and illnesses occurred on trains in 2021. Sixty-six of these occurred because of collisions at railroad crossings on highways.
