[12-01-2022] Driver Struck and Killed in a Car vs. Caltrain Collision in BurlingameAuthorities said a driver was killed in a vehicle and train collision in Burlingame on Thursday afternoon, December 01, 2022.

According to Caltrain, the fatal crash occurred at 1:38 p.m. at the Broadway station near California Drive and Broadway.

The driver reportedly was struck by the southbound 512 train after driving onto the tracks. He passed away at the scene.

The northbound 509 train also encountered delays after getting involved in the deadly crash.

No injuries were reported among the 59 passengers on the 512 train and the 67 passengers on the 509 train.

No other details on the victim were released to the public.

Fatal Train Accident Statistics

According to a report, the 893 railroad deaths recorded were 20% greater than the 744 deaths recorded the year before. There were 5,781 injuries that did not result in death, an increase of 4% over the 5,544 that were reported in 2020.

In 2021, there was a 21% rise in fatalities at highway-rail crossings despite a 20% increase in fatalities overall due to accidents. A total of 617 trespassers, or 94%, lost their lives in the latter.

Eleven people lost their lives on the job in 2020, the same number as in 2019. There were six further fatalities in addition to the two in 2020.

About one-sixth of all cases where the railroad was a factor involved nonfatal injuries and illnesses. Trains killed 266 of the 893 pedestrians that were killed in 2021.

There were 3,216 cases of illness and injury aboard trains in 2021, but no deaths. Highway-railroad grade crossing crashes accounted for 66 of these fatalities.
