One person was killed after a deadly rear-end crash involving a big rig in Escondido on Thursday morning, December 2, 2021.

[12-02-2021] San Diego County, CA - Fatal Big Rig Accident in Escondido Results in One DeathThe accident transpired at approximately 2:30 a.m. on the northbound side of Interstate 15, just south of the Bernardo/Pemardo Road off-ramp.

A northbound vehicle was traveling on Interstate 15 when the driver failed to see the slow-moving semi-truck in front of him. The man then rear-ended the back of the trailer attached to the big rig.

Due to the severity of the impact, the car caught fire. Emergency personnel immediately responded to the scene and extinguished the flames. Unfortunately, the driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities suspect that the driver may have been unable to see the semi-truck clearly due to the heavy fog in the area. The semi-truck driver remained at the scene and willingly cooperated with authorities.

The crash is currently under further investigation.
