Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics

In our nation, hit-and-run accidents are harshly punished. Every day, a hit-and-run happens somewhere in the US. Over 2,000 people have been killed in car accidents since 2006, with 60% of these deaths being pedestrians.

Nearly 20% of fatalities result from drivers fleeing the scene after a collision rather than helping the victims. The majority of these drivers are either drunk, have license troubles, or are afraid to remain at the scene for fear of being arrested, so they drive away.

Despite an overall 14% drop in traffic-related mortality between 2007 and 2016, the number of pedestrian fatalities increased by 27% during the same time.

As of 2016, no other state could compare to California regarding the number of fatalities brought on by hit-and-run drivers. It is possible to link 3,562 deaths in the US to California alone.
