Pedestrian Collision Statistics

According to a recent Governors Highway Safety Association report, there were 7,485 pedestrians killed by vehicles in 2021, the highest tally in 40 years.

In 2020, speeding played a role in 8.6% of pedestrian fatalities, up from 7.2% in 2019. Speed has a considerable effect on pedestrian safety. The risks of a pedestrian dying grow exponentially with vehicle speed, from 10% at 23 mph to 90% at 58 mph.

In most cases, pedestrians who are hit by cars suffer serious injuries. When colliding with a vehicle, pedestrians are more likely to receive serious injuries.

One of the primary causes of pedestrian deaths and injuries occurs when drivers fail to yield to pedestrians or brake abruptly.

Use the sidewalks whenever possible, avoid drinking and using drugs while walking, and cross parking lots or driveways cautiously. Thus, injuries are less likely to result from these collisions.
