A 64-year-old woman identified as Felicia M. was killed after a deadly hit-and-run crash involving mail thieves near Yosemite Freeway on Monday afternoon, December 6, 2021.
The fatal accident occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m. at the four-way intersection of Elm and Manning Avenues.
The victim was traveling in a Nissan Versa at a stop sign facing west on Manning. She then drove into an intersection where a northbound Nissan Murano struck her.
The Murano hit the driver’s side of the victim’s Versa, seriously damaging both vehicles. Three occupants in the Murano were suspected to be mail thieves attempting to flee after stealing mail from a nearby mailbox.
The Murano driver was later identified as 30-year-old Bretney G. He faces charges of felony vehicular manslaughter. Meanwhile, a passenger in the Murano was also arrested.
Jason W.,41, has been detained on charges of resisting arrest. Authorities said Tuesday that Jason is charged with resisting arrest with violence against an officer and carrying a hidden weapon. Bail was set at $15,000 for him.
The case is currently under further investigation.
Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
In this case, it is clear that the hit-and-run driver is responsible for leaving the victim hurt and then fleeing the scene. The suspect will likely face charges for crimes when they are caught.
At least 2,049 people died in hit-and-run accidents in the United States in 2016. Around 682,000 hit-and-run accidents happen in the country every year.
Many hit-and-run drivers leave the scene because they don’t want to hurt anyone else. These people might be drunk or high on drugs, have legal problems, not have insurance, or be illegal immigrants.
There are a lot of misdemeanor hit and run cases in California, but the consequences can get worse if someone dies or if the at-fault driver is drunk. After these charges are filed, they could be upgraded to a felony, depending on how bad the case is.
Fresno County Accident Attorneys for Victims of Fatal Hit-and-Run Accidents
Under California law, people who hit and run must report it. There are consequences if you leave the scene of an accident without saying it to the police or giving information to the other drivers. You could spend time in jail or prison and get points on your driver’s license for this. You also put yourself at risk of civil lawsuits from people who want to get money from you.
A hit and run isn’t a normal accident in the eyes of the law. They almost always make it more difficult to get money from insurance companies and the driver who fled. An attorney who has dealt with hit-and-run accident victims before can help.
