Dog Bite Injury Statistics

In the United States, about 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year, with over 800,000 requiring medical attention, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At least half of the people who get bitten are children.

California topped the list of deadly dog bite incidents in 2019. There were 36 dog attacks in 2018, resulting in the deaths of 15 children and 21 adults.

Different states have different laws regarding dog attacks. In California, Section 3342 of the Penal Code lays forth the procedures that must be followed if a dog attack case is brought before a judge. This provision imposes liability on the dog’s owner in the event that the dog bites someone while the owner is lawfully present in a public or private place.

Petting dogs requires prudence due to the high incidence of dog bites. Maintain your composure and avoid physical contact with the dog, as they may bite even if unprovoked.
