Big Rig Accident Statistics

Due to the truck’s superior strength, truck drivers enjoy greater protection than those in less sturdy vehicles or even pedestrians. Data from the National Safety Council indicates that this is the leading cause of death for those traveling by car.

The annual death toll in the United States due to truck-related accidents is approximately four thousand. There are fewer than 2% of incidents that involve a huge rig, yet 12% of fatalities.

Trucks in California are restricted to 55 miles per hour on all state and federal routes. Obviously, if we want to reduce accidents involving semis, we need to reduce their maximum speed.

The California Office of Traffic Safety reports that each year there are over 28,000 truck accidents in the state. In 2017, 359 people lost their lives, while another 9,500 were injured.
