Truck Crash Statistics

Passenger vehicle occupants account for the majority of fatalities in heavy truck crashes. People in smaller vehicles are particularly at risk, which is a major source of concern. Because of their greater height and better ground clearance, trucks commonly underride smaller vehicles in collisions despite their greater weight and greater ground clearance.

According to the National Safety Council, almost five thousand trucks were involved in deadly accidents in the United States last year. This number has increased by a startling 51% since 2009. (when fewer miles were traveled on American roads in the wake of the mortgage crisis of 2008).

Tuck accidents pose a significant public health danger across the country. Traffic is a persistent issue in California, home to some of the nation’s largest cities. According to the state’s Office of Traffic Safety, three thousand five hundred sixty-three people lost their lives in car accidents in California last year.

This represents an improvement over the previous year’s figures by more than 8%, although the number of avoidable deaths is still too high. Reckless drivers must be held responsible for their acts. By doing so, we may all benefit from a safer driving environment in California.
