Train Accident Statistics

In the United States, about 5,800 train-car accidents happen each year. Most of them occur at railroad crossings, but they happen all over the country. In these accidents, about 600 people die, and about 2,300 are hurt. They happen all the time, and they happen all the time.

At crossings where there aren’t any active safety devices or safety devices that aren’t good enough, more than half of all fatal train accidents happen. There are also crossings where there are no safety devices at all. When there are no safety devices, things can go very wrong.

During the day, about 75% of collisions between cars and trains happen when the train hits the vehicle. It occurs nearly half of the time at night, but not all the time. Passing cars are more likely to get hit by trains when the crossing isn’t well marked.

Many things can cause a train to derail, like poorly maintained tracks, not following safety rules, enough security, and other careless things.
