Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics

Legal consequences for hitting another car and speeding away are severe in the United States. Should the driver be identified, he or she will almost certainly be found guilty and punished harshly.

At least one person in the United States causes an accident and flees the scene every day. Roughly 2,000 people have died in such incidents since 2006. It is estimated that over 60% of the fatalities were pedestrians.

On average, one motorist is not caught after causing an accident involving a pedestrian every five times. Due to intoxication, many motorists simply leave their vehicles (drinking, licensing problems, fear of being caught).

While traffic-related fatalities fell by 14% between 2007 and 2016, the number of pedestrians killed rose by a shocking 27% during the same time period.

Hit-and-run accidents were California’s most common cause of unintentional death between 2009 and 2016. Some of the 3,562 deaths in the United States happened in California.
