Drunk Driving Accident Statistics

After consuming alcohol or drugs, it’s not a good idea to get behind the wheel.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that drunk driving causes over 10,000 deaths annually. Substance abuse contributes to roughly 20% (or 15% overall) of fatal car accidents.

Drunk driving is a major factor in California’s annual car accident toll of 30,000 injuries and 2,000 fatalities. A DUI conviction could cost the motorist many thousand dollars, especially if they are an older driver or if their vehicle is costly.

Drunk drivers pose a greater threat to other motorists due to their poor judgment, slower reaction times, and reduced ability to control their vehicles. Never under any circumstances should a person knowingly put themselves in harm’s way.

Victims of car accidents caused by drunk drivers are never at fault for their own injuries. Do not engage in settlement discussions or interviews until you speak with an attorney. Consult an attorney who focuses on cases involving accidents caused by drunk drivers as a first step.
