Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, bicycle deaths dropped 3% from 871 to 846 this year. Bicyclists were killed at a rate of two percent of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities.

Bicycles are considered vehicles in California. When you’re riding a bike, though, you have to act the same way you would when you were driving a car, too. These people have to follow all traffic rules, like stopping at red lights and riding in a straight line.

Many drivers don’t respect the rights of cyclists and ride too close to them when it’s not safe. This can cause injuries and even death.

There have been more bicycling fatalities in California than in any other state. These accidents are most common in cities, where the two modes of transportation meet often. Around 455 cyclists were killed in California between 2016 and 2018.
