Big Rig Accident Statistics

Since trucks are more robustly built and shield their occupants better than other modes of transportation or walking, those who operate them are less likely to be involved in accidents. This has been determined to be the leading cause of death among motorists and pedestrians by the National Safety Council.

More than 4,000 Americans lose their lives in traffic accidents involving trucks every year. Large trucks cause only 2% of collisions but are to blame for 11% of fatalities.

In California, truck drivers are only allowed to go 55 mph on state and federal roads. Reducing the maximum speed limit for semi-trucks is necessary if we want to reduce the number of accidents involving these vehicles.

More than 28,000 truck-related accidents occur annually in California, according to the state’s Office of Traffic Safety. Three hundred fifty-nine people died, and nine thousand more were hurt in 2017.
