Car Accident Statistics

According to the National Safety Council, there was an increase in fatalities on the nation’s roadways in 2020 due to factors such as drivers not wearing seatbelts, exceeding speed limits, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This 8.3% increase comes after three years of declining death rates. There were 42,338 traffic-related fatalities in 2020, up from 2019’s total of 39,107.

Despite this increase, the rate of fatalities per 10 000 licensed vehicles dropped from 33 in 1913 to 1.53 in 2020, a decrease of 95%. In 1913, only 1.3 million automobiles were registered, but 4,200 people were killed in traffic accidents. There were 42,338 deaths and 276 million registered vehicles in 2020.

In 2020, there were fewer people (0.4% more), fewer registered vehicles (-0.2%), and fewer miles traveled (-11.0%). The result was an increase of 21.7% in the death rate per mile traveled, 8.5% in the death rate per vehicle, and 7.9% in the death rate per person.

About 4.8 million people in 2020 needed medical attention after being hurt in a car crash. It was calculated that $473.2 billion was spent on treating people hurt in automobile accidents. Lost time and money at work, as well as the price of medical care, paperwork, repairs to company vehicles, and the cost to the business itself, all add up.
