Big Rig Accident Statistics

A big rig is a large truck that also goes by the names of 18-wheelers, tractor-trailers, semi-trucks, dump trucks, and semis on the highways of the United States.

We’ve seen a significant increase in large trucks engaged in some of the fatal accidents on our roads. Big rigs can weigh up to 80,000 pounds, compared to the average car’s 4,000 pounds. Accidents might result from this huge disparity in size.

As of 2015, about 4,000 individuals were killed in tractor-trailer accidents across the United States. From 2009 to 2015, the number of semi-truck accident deaths jumped by a startling 22%. Tractor-trailers caused almost a tenth of all traffic deaths in 2015.

In this case, a rear-end crash occurred. Large trucks also require a longer braking distance. This happens because the weight and size of the vehicle generate more force, which in turn takes more braking effort to stop.

Newer truck drivers might not be prepared for this, and rear-end vehicles ahead of them if they are not prepared to stop in time. Even experienced drivers can cause rear-end collisions if they are distracted while operating the truck.
