Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics

Causing an accident and then speeding away from the scene is a serious crime in the United States. The motorist, if caught, will almost certainly be found guilty and handed a severe punishment.

At least one U.S. motorist causes an accident and then flees the scene of the crime every single day. Over 2,000 people have died in such incidents since 2006. According to estimates, over 60% of the dead were pedestrians.

Pedestrians are only able to count on one driver being apprehended for every five times they are hurt in an accident. Some drunk drivers have left their vehicles on the side of the road due to various factors such as drinking, licensing problems, and fear of being caught.

While overall traffic deaths dropped by 14% between 2007 and 2016, there was an alarming 27% increase in pedestrian deaths during the same time.

Between 2009 and 2016, more than half of all unintentional deaths in California were caused by hit-and-run accidents. A large fraction of the 3,562 deaths that occurred nationwide occurred in the Golden State.
